INDIANS OF THE WOODLANDS
Participants in this core program will learn about Northeastern Indian family life as well as indigenous peoples' interaction with the woodland environment approximately 500 years ago. A field trip to IAIS includes the following:
  • A visit to IAIS' outdoor replicated Algonkian village, where IAIS educators teach about shelter types and construction, dugout canoes, agricultural practices and more!
  • Experience the Longhouse Room, where a fifty-foot painted mural depicts the roles of men, women and children in these Native societies. Here, participants will see and handle replicated and authentic artifacts and learn to draw conclusions about how the environment provided all of life's necessities.
  • View a short video of woodland lifeways and learn about the importance of hunting deer to Northeastern Native peoples.
  • Explore our primary exhibit, As We Tell Our Stories, and learn about artifacts varying from 10,000 year old projectile points to 200 year old bone tools.
  • Time and weather permitting, students enjoy a short nature hike as IAIS educators identify various trees and plants and their Native uses.
2 to 2½ hours
$7 per student with $100 minimum
